Milford Primary School: MOE-endorsed emergency call-point installation

About the job
The brief
Livewire Electrical Ltd was appointed by Q Maintenance Ltd (Q Group) to undertake electrical upgrades for the high dependency unit at Milford Primary, a school on Auckland's North Shore. The scope covered disconnecting and isolating bathroom power, installing a new bathroom radiant heater, pre-wire and fit-off of bathroom lighting and power points, and installation of three emergency call-points in the high dependency bathroom with an audible alarm activated at the front office.
The challenges
- Identifying suitable emergency call-point options to achieve the desired outcome.
- Finding a solution for an alarm located 80 metres from the call-points.
- Securing a Ministry of Education endorsed design for the emergency call-points.
How we handled it
Livewire collaborated directly with the Chief Advisor of Electrical Services at the Ministry of Education to achieve a cost-effective wireless switching design that the Ministry endorsed for emergency call-points, with clear communication between the Ministry, the call-point supplier and the project manager throughout.
The outcome
The call-point design using wireless switching achieved the 80 metre distance required and was officially endorsed by the Ministry of Education, with cost savings from the wireless approach. Livewire is now endorsed for emergency call-point system installations in high dependency units. The team was led by Kent Griffin with the installation managed by Brendon Chappell, supported by Livewire electricians and an apprentice.
